National Institute of Justice (NIJ)

NIJ has established the Sensors, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence as part of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) system.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

NIST plays a vital role in the researching and testing of biometric standards. Their Web site describes work areas, testing, and workshop in biometrics.

Biometrics Task Force

Department of Defense (DoD) senior leadership has recognized the important role that biometrics play in prosecuting the global war on terrorism, protecting our troops, and securing national security interests. The Biometrics Task Force (BTF), as per DoD Directive 8521 01E, serves to:

  • Act as the DoD proponent for biometrics
  • Lead in the development and implementation of biometric technologies for Combatant Commands (COCOMS), Services, and Agencies
  • Deliver capabilities in order to contribute to the enhancement of the biometric community
  • Increase Joint Service interoperability

Academia

The BCOE engages with academia to conduct applied research to advance biometrics in support of the FBI’s criminal investigative and counterterrorism missions.  As a first step, the FBI established a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University to facilitate the sponsorship of projects at this and other academic institutions.  Initial research projects have been launched, including technical examinations of specific biometric modalities and the collection of biometric samples for future testing and evaluation.  The BCOE is currently formulating both its longer-term research agenda and the processes and structure for soliciting proposals from the broader academic community.  We will communicate our processes in various venues, including this Web site.
